I think it's a bit of both. The power of advertising is very very strong and catch the right person at the right time and it's very easy to sell the product! Especially women I'd say!! I'm a bit of a marketers dream. I do go for nice packaging, but on the other hand I'm not into designer labels one bit. I'd rather buy more items from cheaper places such as Asda and New Look than fall for a name! You are right, it is largely up to us to restrain ourselves rather than be sucked in by these companies. That's one of the reasons I live in the countryside. I think I'd be fatal living too near civilisation!!

Try googling Merton's Strain Theory. He basically proposed that there were various ways to access the american dream (arguable what is being advertised...).
Some people can access it through legitimate means, some are happy not to access and just get on with things and some want the dream (or the 'bling'?!) and can't access it legitimately so go about it criminally (Merton wrote in the 1930s in America, when lots of immigrants were 'creating job opportunities')
I stuided it in my first year of social science, quite interesting.....

It takes a contribution of many factors coming together in order to produce an outcome. Blaming only one specific factor for the entire cause is not efficient. Change what you can control which is your part of the contribution. Then, the result will be different.
People who steal from others need to be blessed with knowledge, understanding, and compassion; blessed with the intelligence to know that the act of stealing is wrong and understand the universal law of karma. Give more and more will come back your way!

Yes it seems to most we're living in a fantasy world, and if goods are not reachable in the normal way fast enough, many are pressured into the quick way,and with so little care for others being taught in homes and schools etc.advertisers are winning anyway. There are volumes more to be said on this

Everyone is responsible their activities. If one influences others in the wrong way they are responsible for their part. We are responsible for our actions and we can not blame anyone for what we choose not even the devil or Maha(illusion). One will get their due karma one way or another, in this life or the next. (good or bad reactions to our actions) We have to become sincere seekers of truth and follow that. We have to give up this illusion and come to the Absolute truth. go to stephen-knapp.c for Universal truth and the Universal Path to enlightenment. It will bring you so much happiness to understand the big picture.

There are people in this world that feel that they are truly disadvantaged, and that they will never achieve things that they want (or think they want) unless they do something that is against the social norm. That is what needs to change.
