I am creating a personal web site, and was intending on using frames, but have noticed that a few people are saying it's a bad idea (something to do with a virus?). However, it works fine on I.E. 6 / 7 as far as I can see.
So a few questions:
1) Does this apply to all frames, or just iframes (not that I know what the difference is!)
2) What browsers won't show content that uses frames, and how common are these?

Frames are not recommended because:
-they don't show up on mobile phones
-they don't show up on a small percentage of browsers (like 10% or something, but even if that's "small" it's good to try and make a website compatible for everyone)
-Browsers don't print frames properly (especially scrolling ones)
-It is shown that most users don't prefer frames
-Users can't bookmark a page that's in a frame.
-Slows down browsing speed (not really noticeable in fast computers)
-Causes search engine problems when search engine bots are trying to store your site on the database

The problem with frames these days is less to do with browser compatability and more to do with the fact that frames are often not the best way to create a web page. There are many issues regarding frames:
1. Interferes if people want to print the page
2. Interferes if people want to bookmark a specific page (not just your home page)
3. Search engines will often not list frames sites
There are many better ways to put together a site other than using frames (like server side includes, CSS, etc.) if you're looking for a way to have a common navigation across the site.

You don't need to worry about browsers not supporting frames. 95% of internet users are using a frames compatible browser these days.
