microsoft video file opens in windows media player but plays only sound (no video). what codec do i need? and how can i convert the file to burn to dvd?

Are you refering to "wmv"s (windows media viewer files)
If so, you are able to change wmv's into avi and other formats, simply go to...
Start>programs>accessories> Windows Movie Maker
Then when you are saving your movie file, be sure to change the format to avi, or what ever you need.
