Combine all of your like terms on one side or the other of the equation:

8j - 3j + j = -4 - 4 + 2

6j = -6

j = -1

The answer is -1, but knowing the answer isn't as important as knowing how to get it. So.... First move all the j values to the left of the = sign, and move all the integers to the right side. When you do this, the signs (+s and -s) have to be reversed. Here, what you get is 6j = -6. Then divide j's multiplier into the -6, and the rule here is that when multiplying or dividing numbers with unlike signs, the answer is "minus". Hope this helps.
