No way! I live in the Northwest, so the solar feature would have to use to me (except for three months of the year.)

If the companies want to make solar cars, they'll need to reduce the size of the technology (less surface size) and give all of them electrical- or gasoline-operated backups, for when it's not sunny.

Batteries to store the energy for long periods of time would not be enough (these are usually found in current solar vehicles) since some areas don't get ample sun all times of the year.

A great idea, but the car companies would have to actually invest money, time, and labor into these cars. And as we all know, those the the big three (investing) enemies of business.

For $5000 more, the complete lack of gas would easily make up for it in operational costs. People will buy hybrids for that sticker increase, particularly for luxury cars that already cost an arm&leg.

The trick is always to get the solar car to perform similar or better to the gasoline car. My hybrid has noticeably more power than the gasoline model and is very clean for the environment, even though the savings in gas is generally modest at best.

There already are solar powered cars. They even have building competitions and country spanning races. There are also plenty of alternative fuel vehicles that are superior to solar at the present time. The popularity of the Toyota Prius is being matched by the political and financial clout of the oil and auto industries which have little interest in switching to alternative fuels. And, really, why should I switch to something less powerful, less convenient, and less reliable?

If I were in the market for a new car and could afford it, I'd love to have a car powered by alternative sources. I had the opportunity to ride in a hybrid vehicle shortly after moving to Washington state, and they make all kinds of sense!

If such a car exsisted then of course I would as not only would i be saving the environment (a bit it takes a lot of carbon to make a car) but I would also be saving money in the long run

I would absolutely get one right away! It might take a while to use $5,000 in gas but I'd also be helping the environment. I'd be there to buy the new car in a heartbeat.
