My opinion is that it is messing with things that we don't understand.
Nobody really knows how life works, or how procreation really takes place.
By messing around we are destroying natural evolution, and creating potential situations for the spread of incurable disease.
Any of the pros can be examined, and the question 'Why?' asked.
There is almost always a logical answer.
Why do we need more food? Because the nutrition of present food has been destroyed by the fore-runner of genetic engineering - unnatural farming in order to make more profit.
Almost always there is an answer which ends up with - to make more profit.
Our current society is run on the idea that profit is essential. If we examined all these things down to the root we would see that society is definitely headed in the wrong direction, and genetic engineering is a part of that.
It's of no long term benefit to the human race.

First, we gotta get the definitions straight. Do,
we mean by "genetic engineering" altering the
genetic makeup of the organisms of the planet.
This happens slowly by evolution, more quickly
be selective propagation (i.e. we plant more
tasty plants than non-tasty (or pretty or useful for
some other purpose)). Thus by virtue of living,
we perform genetic eningeering to some degree...we kill some things, we help others live and propagate. We do this on the human scale
by choosing mates and enforcing law. Genetic
changes can be made more quickly nowadays
by artificially moving genes from one species to
another or just modifying those genes. We do
this already in agriculture (e.g. corn). But, if
we're talking about doing this rapid modification
on a large scale and with homo sapiens, then
things get a bit sticky from a public policy viewpoint.......and.....

Well I reckon some folks would say that
genetic engineering is the domain of God
and is too dangerous for mankind to mess with.
However, all engineering is just messing with
things in order to find different (sometimes
better, sometimes worse) ways of accomplishing
things. Other folks would make legal and economic arguments about "who can patent or
own a life form?". Many would argue against
the dangers of genetically modifying life forms
because we would be in a moral conundrum about
what to do with life that is man-made. Some folks
argue for the benefits of feeding people and improving people's health with genetic engineering. Other's claim moral arguments that
it is "just not right" to mess with nature at this level.
I guess the same sorts of arguments were made
about nuclear engineering, chemical engineering...
and so on...and to some extent, both sides were right.

Genetic engineering could allow us to manipulate human evolution by controlling the kind of people we want. But, who make those decisions? Racism, sexism, homophobia: they could all force genetics in one direction, excluding the people that were being oppressed. This was what the Nazis envisioned and they were among the first to try to do genetic engineering.

Genetic engineering will progress no matter what happens in the US. God gave us the ability to reason and evolve. It is a natural function to attempt to resolve human irregularities.
It would take a hundred years to develop a super culture.
