I don't want to sound mean but new york city is famous for eating people like you alive. My buddy moved to the big apple when he was accepted to the juliard school of music. His parents weren't real happy about his choice to move up north to the big city but soon realized they needed to support their son. Anyway he headed to NY with all his possesions in a trunk and a suitcase on he took the train. when coming out of Grand Central Station a cabbie asked him if he would like help loading his obviously heavy luggage. my friend, the naive trusting sort agreed. he helped the cabbie load his trunk and his suitcase into the back of his cab, then he watched in disbelief as the cabbie got into the cab and drove away. All his savings, all his sheet music, all his clothing in fact everything but the shirt on his back was driving away as fast as he can. This was his first NY minute. He dicided that this wasn't going to stop him he started walking towards juliard, he ate a hot dog from a street vendor and put some ketchup and mustard in his pockets and some napkins, he kept walking and then a swarm of pedestrians ran into him while trying to cross the street.(this is all to common in NY). so eventually he made it to Juliard, but when he went to get his wallet to check in at the school, guess what? You guessed it, someone in the mob of people had picked his pocket and stolen his wallet containing his drivers license, social security card, visa card and pictures of his girlfriend and family plus all the remaining cash he had on him. He was so ashamed he sat and cried while NY city laughed in his face. All he wanted to do was come there to be a great concert pianist. He tried to check in but with out ID the school would not let him, however someone did give him a stamp and an envelope to write home to his mom, he was to ashamed to call his dad. For two weeks he lived in the restroom at Juliard and lived off a strafoam cup and the ketchup and mustard packets he grabbed from the hot dog vendor earlier that day, plus he took crackers from the cafeteria in the building until security caught him, when the school found out they were dumb founded as to this inhumanity. Luckily that day, a letter from his mother with replacement id and a check showed up at the registrars office saving his ***. He did graduate but that first year was rough, he might not have made it if not for some charity of some church going older ladies who loved how he played the piano. My point is NY is not for beginners, do some serious research, visit, test it by your self before committing that much money.

I have visited New York three times. It's a very large city, multi-ethnic and 24hours alive. You will be amazed with the facilities, the different types of people, excellent restaurants and shops and gradens and dogs and squares and ice skating at central park at christmas. Its a dream. BUT if you go there for a living and trying to find a job is very difficult. Imagine millions of people that are trying to do what you want to do..and you have to know that working in New York means only working. No parties and no sex and the city. Its really taught to work for so many hours but on the other hand you can be very well paid. In my opinion you should go, give it a try and if you ever feel lonely, just go for a walk and remember that you are in a great city with very polite and social people. If you realise you were not born to work 24 7 then you should move to Europe :)

NYC is the best place in the world, but living of cost their is very very expensive, espically Manhattan. A normal one bedroom apt will run you around 1500-2000. you might want to rent those studio apt. Try to avoid the Greenwich Village bunch of gay bars there. For the good clubs they're in Soho. You ned to also learn to read the subway maps since having vehicle in NYC is also very expensive.

$48k will last about 2 months. Add more zero's to your 48k.

NYC is VERY expensive.
