when youre talking on the phone and lose the call.

cell phones use radio towers, when you lose signal with the tower, the call is dropped from the network.

also happens when you drive and you can't pick up a new tower after you leave the broadcast area of the previous tower.

A dropped call is when you are talking on the phone and the call ends without you ending it. The reason that this happens is because of a couple of things.....

Reason one: your phone gets its signal from towers (duh). When you are out of range from one tower, the call is "handed off" to the next tower which will be your closest. Sometimes ther are bad handoffs, which means that the call doesn't register on the new tower, but is out of range of the old tower.

Reason two: you are on a call and the tower that you are on gets overloaded with too many phones trying to use that tower. Sometimes, this causes the tower to kick users off so that it will hand off to another tower.

These are the main reasons that calls are dropped. Cingular has the least dropped calls according to an independent marketing research company. This means out of all the calls that are made on all the networks, Cingular has better handoffs and more towers, which means less tower overload.

By the way, companies do not charge you for dropped calls. If it registers on the network, you are charged for one minute. Sprint credits you back for that one minute. But the call HAS to be just one minute, otherwise, they won't credit you.

hope this helps!

Loss of signal during conversation. Singular is lying about having the fewest. Every third call on my cingular cell phone is dropped. They stink at customer support too!

Its when you are on the cell phone and the call ends because it lost the signal or for any other reason then they call it a dropped call. If you were using your minutes for the cell phone like not when its free, then it charges you for dropped calls. (well some companys do, like Sprint) But now they are paying for each dropped call.(cingular)

Whenever you are on the cell and for one reason or another the call gets disconnected, it is considered a dropped call. This can happen due to switching between towers, environmental conditions, etc.
Cingular (and most other companies) will credit you back the time for the call but it is hardly ever worth pursuing since it takes forever to get through to them to report it.

A "DROPPED CALL" is when you are talking on your cell phone & all of the sudden you are no longer talking to anyone because your phone has disconnected them.
