I have a 95 Jeep Wrangler and I recently put a lift and bigger tires. I want to take off the old tire since it is much smaller than the new tires but if I take the spare off then I have the spare holder which also holds the brake light... So I'm hoping to take that off (which will also remove the spare holder/brake light)

So my question is "Is a third brake light required in Colorado?"

Thanks everyone and if you have a source please post it so I can print it off...

Everyone is telling me to contact the police - I thought I wrote that above - But I've called the police and the DMV and next I think Ill try to call a garage like someone suggested above.

Police told me that it depends on the year and to find out I would need to call the DMV - The DMV told me I needed to call the police... Very frustratring

Okay guys - Thanks for all of your answers... Eventually I talked to a guy that works at 4 Wheel Parts and he assured me that it would be legal to scrap it... Thanks for all of your research and just to let the people who were saying its a law for Manufactures to put them on: Yes, they must put them on; But since it is NOT REQUIRED by the law to have a third light after it leaves their manufacturing plant it is your decision to keep it or scrap it.

I don't think so, but you might want to contact your local police department. Some things depend on your county rather than the state and it seems that the third light would fall into that category.

The law requiring manufacturers to have the third brake light is a federal requirement.

Since like the late 80's it was required by all manufacturers to start putting in third brake lights. So, yes, you have to have it there.

Since you have a 1995 vehicle, then I believe that is a federal requirement to have the third light. Call a garage in your area that does state inspections, if your state requires inspections. Or call the local police station and ask them.
