Try a doctor, the nail salon will just "solve the problem" by putting some nail polish on it or something

It WILL grow back, but it takes time. I'm sure it seems waaaay longer than it actually has been. I highly recommend taking calcium (WITH trace minerals) daily (at bedtime - it helps restful sleep). It really does speed the regrowth! (I take it and have fingernails like most people's acrylics. I actually have to cut them to keep them from getting annoyingly long and catching on stuff.) Also, for those thinking long term, tho' I'm over 60 I have the bone density of a 20 year old. My hubby got me started after a bad fall...with multiple (12) foot/ankle/leg fractures. Doctor could NOT believe how fast I healed!

Unfortunately - there is no exact time as to how long it takes. What has happened is that the nail is dead and it just takes time for it to sluff off.
Don't put anything on it - just let it do it's own thing, and by all means, don't pull on it or try pulling it off.
It will also take quite a bit of time to grow the nail back, and it probably won't come back as your original nail did.
Again - it's a slow process, and as it peels off, new skin is growing underneath - that is why I said not to pull any of it off, it has to heal on it's own.
Sorry I couldn't give you better news.

I had my entire thumbnail come off once....jsut put a bandaid on it and if you don't bite it ( you probably wont) it should take about a week or 2 to grow back. Just say you got a cut on your thumb if your embaressed about having no nail.

It will grow back at your nail's normal rate, unless you damaged or destroyed the root, which then it will grow back deformed or not at all.
