Is it okay if I do four? Two shonen and two shojo... :]

Naruto
Yes, there is a manga, and don't watch the anime past episode 135 unless you want to be bombarded with fillers. The anime picks back up on the manga early next year, though. :] I have to say, Naruto is probably my favorite anime/manga duo of all time. If you haven't already, it's really worth checking out.

Death Note
This is planned to only have 37 episodes, with 8-9 aired so far. Personally, I like the manga better. The story is really original and unusual since the main character is rather, uh, evil. There are two live-action movies which I haven't seen, but both have topped the box office in Japan for weeks.

Ouran Koukou Host Club
Hilarious, 26-episode shojo anime based off the [longer] manga. By far my favorite shojo anime.. I haven't read much of the manga, but the anime by itself is worth watching.

Nana
This manga/anime probably only attracts the female audience. It's about two girls with the same name and very different personalities.. It may sound boring, but it's a great read. There's an anime and a live-action movie with a sequel in the making.

There are many genres within anime. You can put ten anime fans in a room and they will all like different things. The only anime I know that most anime fans will all watch and enjoy is Hellsing. Hellsing is a modern day vampire series set in England.

Other than that, Slayers tends to play well to both males and females. It's fantasy parody series.

for 2 i highly recomend Rurouni Kenshin (a romantic comedy based in Meji era japan, about a wandering swordsman who is an ex assassin that fights to defend people to atone for his past sins. also my personal favorite anime of all time and yes it has a manga, currently up to volume 28 in english). and i also highly recomend Trigun. i haven't bought that series yet but i've seen some of it and it's kidn of like kenshin, but with guns lol. that one has a manga too.

a few short series i've seen that i love are Hellsing (13 episodes, 80 dollar box set), Fooly Cooly (6 episodes... dunno how much money)
and Love Hina (25 eps, about 40 dollar for full series and the OVA's).

the kenshin series btw on dvd is about 100-130 box set for all 95 episodes and another 30-60 dollars for the 3 ova's (30 for regular 60 for directors cuts) and about 20 for the motion picture on dvd.
