Beta-female? Oh deary me, some people! The female equivalent using the same terms would be an alpha female. You cant have both obviously. There are lots of animals that do feature females in dominant positions though the I've never heard the term alpha females in such context. They're called matriarchies (as opposed to patriarchies) which basically means ruled by the mum.

Various eusocial insect societies are 'ruled' by their queens which are solely responsible for breeding new drones. In fact, this is significant, in nature replicating your genes is the most important goal in life so the dominant 'animals' are basically the ones who are allowed to breed and who suppress the ability to others in their group. Bumblebee queens secrete a substance that stops the workers laying eggs. When that fails she will storm around her hive eating eggs laid by any other female.

In hierarchical structured animals, such as wolves, the female equivalent of the alpha male would be the alpha female.

These deepsh!ts have it all wrong.

A MATRIARCH is the female equivalent of an alpha male. Such social structure, in which a female is considered the head of the herd, can be observed among the elephants.

I suspect you mean a matriarch.

The alpha male leads a group - but for some animals, the groups comprise of entirely females and juvenile males (adult males either join bachelor groups or live solitary lives). The leader of this all female group is the matriarch.
