Common injuries are the same as for any contact sport, and then some. You'd expect answers like "back", "feet" "knees", but let me tell you - one girl in my class broke her hand while dancing. (She had an arm movement, perhaps, done too vigorously; partner took wrong step in the way of her arm)

Every person has their own weak areas that they have to take special care to warm up and stretch. In addition, most people do general strengthening and stretching exercises. That varies - from weight training and swimming and to pilates and yoga.

Good dance shoes are a "must" for me and for many dancers I know. Or else - mysterious ankle and foot injuries are on the way.
I carry a pair of legwarmers in my dance bag - if my ankles are not quite comfortable or if the studio is cold I have an option of wearing them. As you guessed, ankles is my "problem" area.

on my team the most common injuries are:

(me) torn ACL. this RARELY happens to dancers. weak knees are common though. other problems like tendonitis, water on the knee, torn or overstreatched muscles and minor ligament damage are the most common.

arms and elbows especially can be injured.

feet injuries.

SHIN SPLINTS. ouch.

back and neck injuries. bruised ribs.

basically any injury that includes any body part you dance with.

i would say the MOST COMMON is strained, pulled or torn muscles.

not really and injury---but dehydration is very common.

ways to prevent injuries...never stretch with cold muscles. always do some kind of warm up before stretching. jog in place. do jumping jacks that sort of thing.

always stretch before you do any dancing kinda stuff. take good care of your body and drink a lot of water. don't push your limits if you feel your body telling you that you've had enough or there is PAIN stop right away and take a break.

always be aware of your body and feelings.

i hope this helped.

If you stretch, you should be fine. I didn't injure myself until I was 24, so that is pretty good shelf life. If you can afford, see a masseuse. My left foot stopped pointing when I told it to, and it was related to one of my legs being pushed up farther into my hips socket than the other. Keep warm and stretch.

I have a weak back and so I like to relax and stretching my spine before I dance.
