Because if they are rotten in their center, they don't want you to see it too soon, until it's too late and you've taken a big whiff of putrid rancid smelling flower. I've gone through this very thing myself - thought I could trust someone only to get stabbed in the back (metaphorically) for no reason other than the person wanted my money and my home life.

A true friend is like a flower that pops open just before you bend down to smell it - able to trust enough that you won't step on the flower, or hurt it - and show off it's pretty colors...

That is a very good question...thumbs up! It takes time to get to know a person and some people are very clever and do not show their real colors early...do not get me wrong some do but the ones that end up doing the most damage are usually slick enough to not show their bad side to you until later...from habit and because that is the way they operate...some people just get a kick outta "getting over" on other people.
