how can u tell if a thumb joint is broken or sprung?

Tap on the end of the injured thumb. If you experience "shooting" pain it may be fracturedso go get x-rayed. If not, try pushing your thumb away from your index finger. If that hurt you have probaly sprained your ulnar collateral ligament. Hurts a little, but no big deal. Immobilze if you want, but should feel better soon.
