I certainly hope so.
They cost more than a penny to make.
They cost everyone time and money at the cash register.

(sigh)
Unfortunately, there are people stuck in the past who can't let go of outmoded ideas such as the penny. When I was in Sydney everything was rounded to the nearest nickel and it was great!

(And for those of you really, really slow at math, rounding doesn't make society lose money in the long run, since half of the amounts get rounded up, and half get rounded down.)

That's what I hear. They're bringing back the dollar coin as well, so $1 bills may not be around much longer either.

That rumor runs around every once in a while but there's no serious proposal at this time. Which is not to say there won't be someday.

They keep talking about it, but they have yet to do it. Consider pricing. I buy a cup of coffee and paper at my local McDonald's and it is, $2.01. they could round up or down, but they must think it is attractive pricing to price something at, $1.99.
