Is it safe to travel to Vietnam for an American citizen?
My wife is Chinese but is from Vietnam and she wants me to travel there to meet her family. I have never been out of the country and am nervous of going to Vietnam.

Yes it is very safe to travel to Vietnam. There are many airlines taking you to Vietnam, a first indication that all are more than ok. In the major cities, there are many 5-star western hotels (sheraton, hyatt, furama, ...) And you will find many tourists wandering the streets, going to the clubs, or visiting the local restaurants. Vietnamese people are very friendly and have a custom of treating foreigners very nice. Communication and transportation are also very convenient, so even when you think you are in a bad situation, it should be fairly easy for you to get out of it :-).

During the last summer, there were a few first-time western folks going on a trip back to Vietnam with us. They enjoyed the trip very much and have since been talking about taking more trips there soon.

Dude....get to steppin' to that plane!
Two years ago I went and at first my reaction was mixed. Now I can't wait to go back. I flew to HaNoi from Bangkok and saw Ha-Long Bay. Incredible. The people were a bit stand offish at first but as each day of my 16 or so day trip went on the feelings were warmer. I travelled down the coast and visited Hoi An, a little artisan community, Nha Trang, a beach side town and other locales. I ended up in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)before crossing the border to Cambodia.

I was travelling alone most of the time with no problems. I was treated kindly and the food was great! I booked nothing. I just hit the border and all I had was my trusty Lonely Planet Guide. It wasn't perfect but I got all around with at least some advice.
Don't miss out! This is a cultural experience you will never forget!

It's safe. Especially since your wife is a vietnamese. Trust her to look after you yah. Otherwise, why marry her? I think the only worries you should have is not to offend them by your ignorance of their culture. Since you're meeting her parents for the first time(I assume), read up on the dos and don'ts so that you make a good impression. Don't go to district 7 though. Like all countries, they have their own black zone. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

It is safer there in the big cities than in the US big cities. We go almost every summer for a month and I have never had problems. If your wife is Chinese Vietnamese you will really have a good time, she can speak the local language. So many people there speak english any way too. I would go either way. good luck. cheers.

Viet Nam is great! I've been there twice and I have 2 more trips planned. You get a lot of looks, but only because they are curious. The only thing I was really warned about was pick-pockets, but it hasn't happened to me. But everybody there is very friendly and out going.

Yes, even for War vets like me. They are actually very friendly. I ended up meeting one of VC I had fought way back when. We got drunk together. Funny thing is, I felt closer to him than many civilians I know.
