This is a hormone your body produces when you are pregnant. Having a high level of progesterone in your body signals your ovaries that you are pregnant and don't need to release an egg. So, your body thinks it is already pregnant and doesn't waste releasing an egg when it can't be fertilized any way.

"Mechanism not clearly known. May alter cervical mucus and the endometrial environment, preventing penetration by sperm and implantation of the egg. Ovulation may also be suppressed"
In other words, the natural mucus is made thicker so the sperm cannot get into the uterus (womb) and does not allow the egg to attach to the uterus (which is needed for preg). If there is no ovulation, no egg is released so there is nothing to fertilize.
