It depends if how you classify "virus." If you just include the strict definition of virus there are thousands but if you include broader categorizations of malware then there are many more. Other types of malware include spy ware, adware, worms, and trojan horses. If you include those definitions and differentiate between each version there could be millions at this point. There are still undiscovered ones so you cannot put a hard number on it.

About 350,000 viruses and Trojans. It's impossible to say exactly, because new ones appear at the rate of about 5,000 per month, so any exact answer to this question becomes obsolete before it is given...
However, note that only a minuscule part of these are actually spreading in-the-wild. Most of them are for obsolete operating systems (like MS-DOS), or no longer spread, or exist (and have existed) only in the virus collections. I'd say, the number of viruses actually causing problems is no more than a few thousands. Unfortunately, the list is dynamic (new ones appear and old ones disappear all the time).

there is an infinite number of viruses, and that number grows every day. but there are 4 different types of viruses. here's a description of all five, and the rating from one to five, one being annoying but not a threat, five being oh, crap:
spy-ware/ad-ware: this type of virus monitors the websites you go to and will send you pop-up ads accordingly. example: visiting many web sites about art/drawing would cause pop-ups advertising paint or pencil sets. rating: 1
Trojans: these viruses pose as important files that, when opened , will release a virus that can destroy most of your computer & files. rating: 3
logic bombs: one of the rarer types, these will delete all information stored on the computer when an certain event happens. examples: visiting a special website, using the computer for a set period of time, 100th shut down, etc.
rating: 4
chains: these viruses are like logic bombs, the only difference is that these viruses can be e-mailed to someone else without you knowing it, thus bestroying all of the information on your computer and the computer of the person you sent the e-mail to.
rating:5
