Five gallons are too small for schooling fish and social fish, because you can't keep more than one or two. That means tetras, rasboras, danios, cories, guppies, mollies, and platies are all not good choices. Goldfish need 10 gallons a piece so I definately wouldn't go with one of those. One dwarf gourami or one betta is really all that will work in a five gallon. Or you could go with some small colorful shrimp and snails.

If it were me with a 5 gallon tank, I would consider a Betta and some java ferns. A 5 gallon is too small for schooling fish and too small to have any algae eating fish in. Betta's are actually wonderful companion fish and actually appear to take on a personality of their own.

Ok i work in a fish store, and those two other answers are possibly the WORST you could put in a 5 gallon. If you want the hardiest fish i would suggest platys and you could put in 4 of 5 of them. As for neon's their much too sensitive and you need a school. Another fish you could try is black tetras mixed with painted tetras if you don't like the look of a platy. These tetras are larger and you could have around 3 or 4 of them. I would definitely stick with the platys they are much easier and they have nice bright colours.

Neons are great. They are small so don't require too much room and you can get standard neons, black neons, and can put like 8-10 in a small aquarium and I'd say they'd do good. Don't do goldfish, they produce too much ammonia too fast, and will die.
