I just saw that Seinfield episode again and was wondering if it's really a known fact. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about what happens to a guy in cold water or when it's cold in general.

Yes, but I have to admit that I didn't before I first saw that Seinfeld episode (when it originally aired). I think that definitely made it more common knowledge.
