I am a pretty clean person, my house is always organized since I'm such a perfectionist yet there is always this smell of poop or something in the air. And it's not the bathroom, and no I do not have any pets. I want to impress my mother when she comes to visit next week,

you said your apartment and then the house was re-carpeted.
if it is an apartment are there any vacant units next to yours? they need to get maintenance out there to run the water in all the plumbing. if you look under your sink there will be a pipe that is shaped like a "u", it is designed this way to keep a little water in it each time you use the sink. this keeps sewer gases from backing
up into the apartment or a house. if the drain hasn't been used in a while, the water evaporates leaving you exposed to sewer gas.
so make sure that all of your drains have some water added to them and if you have central air there will be a drain line there and finally if you have a washing machine hook up make sure that drain has water in it. hope this helps.

One thing that may help is putting abowl of vinegar in a few corners through out the house. Another thing you may consider getting checked are your vents. I had a awful smell in my house from a bat that died in the heating area. If it's a apartment it could be the neighbors. I had one that must have cooked like you said poopie everynight. Get incense oil and burner it works the fastest, so you can relight it whenever you smell it.

LOL Your a bachelor right? Checked your washing machine for stagnant water yet?

And to cover up odor, try using one of those aroma players with music and scent. It'll add a pleasantness to the house your mother should appreciate. Christmas is coming, potpourri in pretty bowls here and there adds something nice too.
