San Diego and Los Angeles are both big cities. It depends on: (1) how fast you drive, (2) which part of S.D. you're coming from, (3) which part of L.A. you're going to, and (4) when you are traveling. With no traffic it takes about 2 hours from Encinitas (North County San Diego) to Sherman Oaks area, going about 75-80 mph. But if you leave during rush hour, it can take 3-3.5 hours, depending on traffic, because you can't go as fast.
