I've noticed since I've had my furnace serviced that when it's running, there's a faint fuel oil smell in the house. It's not overpowering and I can only smell it when I walk between the dining room and the living room. Is this anything to be concerned about?

This happened to me last year. It turned out that the nozzle that sprays the fuel oil into the burner was clogged and needed replacement. It's not especially dangerous, but it does make the house smell and the burner's efficiency is greatly reduced.

Getting the nozzle replaced shouldn't be too expensive. If you have a service plan then it's likely covered. If you don't, it'll probably cost about 50 dollars or so.

Oil Smell In House

I am assuming your heating system uses fuel oil.

#1. Was the person or firm that serviced your fuel oil furnace licensed by the state you're in? Sometimes the firm is licensed
but, some individuals in the firm are qualified on natural gas furnaces, electric furnaces or heat pumps, but not on the very complicated, very dangerous fuel oil furnace.

Check with your state HVAC regulatory outfit! If qualified and
licensed, call the service firm back and explain the problem---
which I assume did not exist til after the furnace was serviced.

#2. If you can smell fuel oil inside your house, it can be potentially very dangerous. There could be an explosion.

#3. The chimney could be defective.

#4. If the furnace is a high efficiency type, there could be a
problem with the exhaust gas fan.

Helpful?

Personally, I despise fuel oil furnaces for home heating.

Yes. Have the company come back AND STAY BY THEM WHEN THEY FIX IT.

Fuel oil fumes scarred my lungs very badly. I was hospitalized FOUR MONTHS with lungs so filled with pus I could hardly breathe. Get it fixed now!!!
