a crucial part of the answer, i believe, lies in these team's records against ranked opponents, since for the most part, that is where their only defeats lie.
BSC #2 USC - 4-0 average .1000
BSC #3 Michigan - 1-1 average .500
BSC #4 Florida - 2-1 average .667(pending Dec. 2 match against #9 Arkansas in Gainesville)
by this statistic alone, i would think that USC is most deserving of an attepmt at the National Championship. however, i still think that Ohio State will destroy them: USC boasts a fast and flashy offense, but their defense will be far outmatched by Troy Smith (and the ultra-talented Antonio Pittman).
as for the other part of the question, if there was anyone that should get a chance to play Ohio State for the title after USC, it should probably be Florida, not Michigan. why?
most obviously, Florida boasts a better winning average against ranked opponents than Michigan by a factor of 1/2 (for now, anyway). some would counter this argument by saying that Michigan's only loss was to Ohio State, but remember, Florida's ranked loss was to Auburn at Auburn. It would be easy for most NCAA teams to lose to the powerful combination of Tommy Tuberville, Brandon Cox, and Kenny Irons in Jordan-Hare stadium--just ask Alabama coach Mike Shula, who has done so twice (and three times at home) in five years.
In terms of their ranked wins, Michigan beat #10 Notre Dame (clearly over-ranked this year). Florida defeated #16 Tennessee and #5 LSU--two of the top teams in the SEC perennially, which unlike Notre Dame, field two of the most intense defenses in the nation.
in conclusion, OSU over USC by 10, and Florida would have been a better pick than Michigan.

I would agree with you if you promised to jump off the empire state building if USC gets in the title game and beats Ohio State.
Do you promise?
Okay Michigan fans here's why USC should be in the title game:
1.They 've played Arkansas (Playing for SEC title)
2. They 've played Nebraska (Playing for Big-12 title)
3. They 've played Cal (preseason No.9 in the AP polls)
4.They 've played Oregon (ranked at high as 12th in the AP i think)
5. They've played Notre Dame (preseason No. 2 in the AP polls) and Notre Dame has since losing to Michigan made adjustments and improved over the season.
6. They've played 9 teams with winning records and two teams with 6-6 records. No teams with losing records.
7 AP officials, coaches, Media, Computer all rank them at No.2.
8. USC's had 3 consecutive No.1 recruiting classes and 5 straight Pac-10 championships. I don't care what conference you from, try to win 5 straight titles in this one.
9. USC has been in the title picture for each of past 4 years. Try to do that before you start getting cocky after losing to No.1 team by 3 points.
10. USC plays 15 true freshmen and only 4 seniors. They have matured during the season and they are playing their best ball in November. Plus Pete Carroll is 20-0 in November. Prestige alone can get the Trojans some respect.
11. Stop crying to us that Michigan should get this Michigan should get that. I thought Michigan was a classic program but now I see it has some of the bitterest fans in college football.
Copy and Paste this if needed for further bitter questions from whining Michigan fans.

Better question does anyone else think Ohio State is completely overrated? they dont have a defence and win in shot outs. they didnt play Wisc(BCS#7)in the big 10 and beat Texas(who had a freshie at QB) and they beat Michigan(who were only ranked high b/c they play few good teams). OSU has played easy teams (look at their out of conference schedule and the Big 10 sucks this year) and has no talented defense to speak of.
USC would most likely be undefeated if Jarrett(shoulder) and Smith(ankle) werent both hurt in the Oregon state game. they are the two best recievers in college football(sorry Calvin Johnson). Dont forget also USC doesnt have a power run game B/c their top 3 fullbacks have all been injured this year and are out for the season.
Florida plays a bunch of cupcake teams outside of their conference and is yet to beat arkansas who now has there 3rd string QB spliting time with their RB under center. USC blew them out by % touchdowns with a QB making his first start and a team made up of mostly underclassmen.

here is the reason you are looking for (whether you agree with it or not).
florida plays a tough schedule, but so does USC. even though you think arkansas, nebraska, oregon, cal and notre dame are overrated, the sportswriters and coaches who vote in their polls don't or didn't think those teams were overrated. plus, florida plays two teams from the conference usa and a division two team. how is THAT a strong schedule?
sure USC lost a game, but just who a team loses to is not the only determining factor of a team's ranking. in that game, USC almost came back to tie it up; and they looked good in their comeback campaign.
after USC lost that game, they went on to humiliate the high-powered offenses of oregon, cal and notre dame. they beat them convincingly, and they look like they can beat other great teams out there.
people talk about USC barely winning their mid-season games. well that was long ago and they don't "barely win" anymore. speaking of barely winning, florida needed a miracle blocked field goal in their own house to beat south carolina. then they barely beat florida state last week. according to the analysts, florida didn't look as impressive as USC.
so there you have it, a straight answer.
everyone can go on about how one team is overrated. yadda yadda yadda.
it is what it is. there's always next year.

I was at the UM-OSU game, and I was impressed with the talent of Michigan. Florida is strong, but they have barely gotten by a couple of schools. What I believe happened is that most of the country wants another school to get a chance at Ohio State, hence the polls. I feel that OSU has the most talent and speed, but USC will give them a good game. Michigan is the true #2 team and would give the Buckeyes the biggest challenge. BTW, I live in FL.

I personally like the Ohio State and USC matchup. Ohio has already beaten Michigan and I think USC is a much better program then Florida. So I would like to see Ohio State beat USC and remove all doubt that they are the best team in the nation this year. As a side note I think it will be a pretty good game. USC is fast on both sides of the ball and Smith will have to be on top of his game to prevail. SO I think it would be a great national championship game.

I agree with you. Michigan is the #2 team in college football. The Buckeyes won the game the first time. There are no guarantees that they will win again. My guess is that this OSU team beats your Michigan team 8 out of ten times if we could arrange for them to play that many.
But, the rest of the country does not want to see ANOTHER OSU vs Michigan game.
So the answer to your question is yes, USC is over rated. Ohio State will destroy them. But more people will watch OSU vs USC for the title then would watch a rematch.
Sucks but true.

I think that OSU is going to kill USC but then again I thought that Michigan had no chance. You never can tell with the top teams because anything can happen. Troy Smith is too good and will not let his team lose. He is the Heisman Trophy winner this year, hands down. Henne was in the run for it but lost it with the game agains OSU. Should be a good game

USC is living off past years accomplishments, if you look at all the teams with 1 loss Michigan by far lost to the the best team.
losing to Oregon St should eliminate USC regardless.
