You don't need a chemical reaction.
Frozen carbon dioxide, known as dry ice, can do the job.
It's in a thermos container, but as soon as it touches the air, it sublimates into gaz, producing the smoke. (To make more, put it in water instead.) And it's heavier than air, so it stays close to the ground. And it's not expensive!

I am a Chemistry major in college and Fog is easily made. Essentially it is the combination of solid Carbon dioxide which is known as dry ice. Place the dry ice in warm water in an INSULATED container. Remember to wear gloves, after all it is solid Carbon dioxide. :) Also my friend is a theater major and she uses a fan to blow the fog across stage, it look very natural when done slowly. Keep in mind there is also a way to create more simplistic fog at home using ice cubes, a jar and some water. Good Luck.
