I am 55 years old so yes I have and no I did not find it nasty, messy, or smelly. It was not much different from relations at any other time - although we would put a town on the bed to avoid blood stains which do no wash out easily. In the pre modern era I suppose without ready access to bathrooms, showers, and indoor plumbing it likely was nasty. Religious prohibitions about being unclean during this time are a derivative of the time in which they were written - thousands of years ago. Enjoy.
