The same thing that keeps an artificial satellite in orbit around Earth -- Earth's gravity tries to pull the moon towards it, but at the same time the moon is trying to fly off in a straight line. The two vectors cancel, so the moon ends up going around Earth.

Both the Earth and the Moon are being pushed toward a comon fulcrum by the power that exists in Space called Gravity. There is a reason why they dont collide. the reason is that they have rotational energy of motion. The two systems balance each other at the barry center(the fulcrum) Just like balancing a childs seesaw.All motions in the Universe follow the same rule. So Mass densities in space is due to volume formation by rotation and twisting of space.
The velocity of the smaller mass is alway greater than the rotational velocity of the larger mass. the velocities of the rotating masses all have 2 components and a resultant velocity = 3 vectors plus 3 ractive components which are also 3 vectors..

The fact that nothing is happening to change it. That being the case, the earth's gravity will keep the moon indefinitely, although due to tidal friction the moon's distance from the earth is increasing at about an inch per year.
