Actually, it was revealed about 10 years after the book was released that the author made the character up based on a composite of some of his therapy clients. At first it was passed off as a real person's story though.
(Spoiler Alert!!)
She dies in the end, and yes, it is because of her drug addiction (she used a lot of different drugs throughout the book). I think there was a period of having an eating disorder, but I can't remember for sure (it has been a long time...)

Read the book. It is based on a true story and that did happen to some people back in the 60s, unfortunately.
