A fir like Balsam, Noble, Douglas, Bicolor, Noble, etc. as they smell much nicer. Spruce tends to be better shaped but prickly and sometimes pungent, pine tends to be plumper, drips sap but also smells more aromatic. It also depends on which trees need to be thinned/culled as we try and wait until this time of the year to prune or cut down evergreen trees and not waste anything.

my favorite tree is one thats tall, but not too tall for the ceiling..has to be the perfect tree, round, full, lots of brances..it takes me sometime to find the perfect one..your best bet is go to a christmas tree farm and cut your own, that way you know you have a very fresh tree, not one that was cut a month earlier..but that can be difficult if you dont have the means of a big truck..but its fun..good luck..

Blue spruce about 5 1/2 - 6 feet high about 3 feet circumference, no large holes between the branches no sap dripping and tight needles. Fits nicely in my living room and small holes between the branches I fill with ornaments.

I always buy a Douglas Fir with heavy branches, and a thick stock. And always 6 foot tall.

Frasier fir, it doesn't dry out as quickly, and it doesn't drop needles as much as others.
