If you are likely to forget to water it then grow cactus. They are almost impossible to kill and can have bright colors (like Christmas cactus).

If you are good at growing things and have sufficient natural light in the room, try growing herbs like mint or beebalm. They add a fresh aroma.

If you are really gutsy get one of those spider plants or asparagus ferns and hang it from the ceiling just to see how gigantic you can get it to be.

Consider getting Bonsai plants. They look really cool and just like any other plant basically all they need is sunlight and water. They take up little room and certainly they get attention. I have a group planting of 5 Chinese Elms that are maybe 30 or 40 years old (judging by the bark patterns) but they are only 12" high. In the fall their leaves turn color and fall off, and a month later new leaves come out. I really like these miniature trees and have bought other Bonsai plants, including Ponytail Palms, Cyprus trees, Bonsai Ficus, and some miniature redwood trees.

I'd go for a sansevaria (mother-in-law's tongue or snake plant). It won't care what kind of light you give it, just don't overwater it. The ones I have in good light get watered once a week, those in a north window only once every two weeks.

Just buy a large one, they are very slow growing. You can usually pick them up at Wal-Mart, Home Depot etc.. A 10 inch pot size should run about $8-$10.

It really depends on how much light you get in your room. If your room faces south or west, you can probably grow almost anything, but if it's north or east, you're going to be more limited. Other things limiting the light make a difference, too. Go to a plant store/nursery and ask someone knowledgeable.
