Simply put "motivation" is the reson that you do something. Lack of motivation is the reason you don't.

Motivation refers to the factor that one brings to a challenge. If one wants to be successful in a certain area, or he wants some thing(s), or he wants to marry a certain lady, or he wants a BMW or.....and so on, he must be driven to put in the effort, physical and mental, to get the prize. All of the effort it takes can be traced back from the receiving of the prize or the satisfaction or the knowledge or........and so on, to the "motivational" factor(s) that set all the effort into motion. If one is not "motivated" to do what it takes to get the end result he wants, then he will not follow through and at some point his interest will wane and he will be off on another track which could be called the flavor of the moment. A waste of time, but if that is how he wishes to approach a challenge, then that is his life. The price he will pay for not being motivated to see a challenge through to the end will be failure on many different levels. That is why a broad base of interests provides the best chance to get motivated to achieve over and over again. We can assume that Bill Gates had a curiosity and talent to put together electronic parts to make a product and that when he saw what he could do he became hyper motivated to produce what would become Microsoft but which may have been nothing more than making his machine produce a blank page and then print out a message which he was able to edit prior to printing. That amazing feat created more motivation and the rest is history.

In psychology, motivation refers to the initiation, direction, intensity and persistence of behavior (Geen, 1995). Motivation is a temporal and dynamic state that should not be confused with personality or emotion. Motivation is having the desire and willingness to do something. A motivated person can be reaching for a long-term goal such as becoming a professional writer or a more short-term goal like learning how to spell a particular word. Personality invariably refers to more or less permanent characteristics of an individual's state of being (e.g., shy, extrovert, conscientious). As opposed to motivation, emotion refers to temporal states that do not immediately link to behavior (e.g., anger, grief, happiness).

"I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” ~Stephan Grellet
