Most wireless is limited to about 300 feet or 100 meters clear line of sight. That being said you probably wouldn't be able to stray that far considering that your wireless access point must broadcast through the walls of your home.

I can actually make it about 150 to 175 feet from my front door before I lose my signal, and that is going through brick walls and a metal door.

You can buy range boosting antennas for some wireless routers/access points, but even still you will be limited to the general area around your home. For true mobile internet access, you need to look into a cellular access card from your cellphone provider. All the major carriers (Verizon, Cingular, etc..) have them now.

how far away are you planning on going? if you go more than 50 feet or so outside your house, you probably won't get any reception to your router. but you can pick up wireless signals from other routers. all Starbucks' also have WiFi in them, but you have to pay for access to their network. public libraries and hotels also usually have WiFi you can use. some are free, others are not.

Here's an idea...start walking away from the house and see how far you get before you lose your internet connection.
