Carnac was supposedly a "Mystic Visitor from the East", who would psychically provide the answer to the question contained in the envelope, and then open the envelope to reveal that the question turned the answer into a lame pun, word-play or pop-culture reference - it was a way for Carson's writers to use up gags that were too slight for the monologue, wouldn't stand on their own, or left Johnny with nowhere to go afterwards.

I remember watching those "Carnac the Magnificent" and thought they were funny as heck! He would take an envelope that had a paper sealed on it and, with the envelope up towards his head, would have three things he could "read" from it.
There was this one time, a joke of his-while doing his "Carnac"-was so bad he was booed. He looked directly into the camera and said "May your only son be with a girl that has a disease named after her!" I laughed so hard, I woke up my Grandmother! That was classic. I still remeber it to this day!

It was a comedy routine reminiscent of the great psychics od the early sixties who were on late night television in the local markets. Carnac was the great mystic of the east who could divine the answers to question stuck in a mayonaise jar on Funk and Wagnall's since noon that day, basically about four hours. his answers were all funny when you heard the questions.

Everything Neffer said. Usually the jokes were lame and then Ed McMahon would laugh like a hyena and get paid a fortune for it.
