The Patriots used to be called the Boston Patriots, and had multiple stadiums in Boston and Cambridge, MA, such as Harvard and Fenway Park. Since Boston would not build them their own stadium, they decided to move elsewhere. When the Patriots moved to Foxboro, they were no longer in Boston and decided to change the name to the New England Patriots.

They were originally called the Boston Patriots. Then they moved out of Boston. What would you rather have them called? The Foxborough Patriots? I personally would prefer Boston Patriots, but who decided that only cities or states can be incorporated into teams' names? New England is minuscule compared to California or Texas, so it makes relative sense to name a team after that region. At least they're not the "Midwest Patriots." Then I'd have a problem. As for their winning streak being "unrealistic," I must not understand the question. If they're doing it (and they REALLY are), how is it unrealistic? It's not even predictable anymore. Have you been watching football for the past 2 months? They have had some extremely close calls (Colts, Eagles, Ravens, Giants) and got a hard-fought win tonight over Jacksonville. You think they will notch a "predictable" win over Indy/San Diego next week? Those are both excellent teams. I expect it to come down to the wire, and if the Patriots win, so be it. REAL football fans like me aren't looking for "real" teams like the Jags or Packers (what the hell do you mean by "real," anyway?) to win - they're looking for good football. And as much as you say they're boring, I love watching the Patriots play. Why do you have a problem with them winning? I'm sure if your teams were doing so well, you wouldn't go complaining about them.

Back in the 1700s people fled from England and started their colonies in what is now called New England. It was called New England because they considered it a "New" England (how convienent). Then they fought for the American colonies and were considered "Patriotic" and thus the name New England Patriots came along.

New England because they are from New England. Patriots because of the influence that area had on the revolutionary war and subsequent politics of the US.

because they are in what is considered new england..and patriots because thats what they chose their mascot to be. It's like asking...why are the miami dolphins called the miami dolphins...it's where they practice and its where their "home" stadium is. Honestly I think "foxboro patriots" sounds retarded, thats probably why they went with new england
