I want to replace the standard cooktop I have with one of the newer flat cooktops. I was wondering if it's possible to retrofit the flat cooktop onto my existing oven or if I need an entirely new oven.

I assume that you have a range (oven and cooktop in 1 appliance). There isn't a way to remove the coil burners and replace it with a radient (smooth) top. If you are tired of your range, there are several options for replacing it that are completely affordable. I believe they start at about $499 for a good model, $699 for a top rated model at Sears.

If you have a wall-oven and cooktop (two seperate appliances), then it should be pretty easy to find a new cooktop. Just make sure that you measure carefully and bring the measurements with you to the store. Be exact. A nice cooktop will run you about $499 to $549 and you may want to consider paying extra for installation from a professional. If the company installs it and something goes wrong, they are liable, not you.

I hope that answers your question.

It could be done but until it is all said and done it will cost as much if not more than a whole new range.

You will need to replace the cooking surface and all four burners and the wiring harness and the burner switches and all of the hardware involved.

You are talking about going from a porcelain coated to a smooth glass gas cook top. I have never seen a manufacturer offer a kit to convert to this. You could check with them because Whirpool does sell that type of range. Otherwise I don't think you would be able to get another manufacturers top to fit properly.

I had a similar problem with a rather old gas range. It was just easier and cheaper for me to replace the whole thing.

No, but you can get someone to build a counter where you stove sits and then install the countertop range on that. You will need to get all the hook-ups done if it is gas.

combination cook-tops and ovens draw 50amp service, if they are separate you can hook them as two thirty amp services, both 220, or separate out to gas for the flattop.
further information would be necessary to give you all the correct info you need.

i think so but you would have to call whirlpool and ask.
or you could get a cook top for your counter.
or get a new stove all together.
