Llamas do spit, but it's usually only at other llamas. Llamas that spit at people a lot have probably been abused or mishandled at some point in their lives. Occasionally a llama will spit when vet work is being done (vaccinations, toenail trimming, etc.), but for the most part they only spit at each other and it's usually over food issues. Like any herd animal, llamas have a herd heirarchy and they spit at each other to resolve issues such as who is the "top llama" and who gets to eat first, etc.
They also will kick, but I don't know of any llamas who can break a person's leg with a kick. They do kick hard, and it stings and may leave a mark, but it's not like being kicked by a horse or other large animal. Llamas have a padded foot on the bottom, with two toenails covering the top, so it's not like a regular hard hoof, it's more like a dog's foot.

Yes, they do spit. When llamas feel threatened they will spit. It is a deterant used to scared away "predators".
