I work in the Library where you can check out laptops. We have a sign that say All Laptops are checked out. People will actually stare at the sign and and come up and ask can I check out a Laptop.

Now can people just not read or are they just plain stupid. Which one is it?

Not sure which but my ex-wife was like this. They had a sign with 2 foot letters saying "Layaway" and she went up and asked
where is Layaway.

I think some people just don't read. The other may be that they think it may not apply (e.g. you haven't had time to change the sign). Also, the wording may be confusing to some people as in they are reading it as: "all laptops must be checked out" ---

possibly if you change the sign to read "No laptops available for checkout" OR with a yes/no sign attached?
Either way, you'll still get people asking.

theyre just plain frickin stupid. if you are not stupid than you woldnt stare at a sign that says "All laptops are checked out" then go up and ask for a laptop. smart people acctually do something called read the sign.

I'm a librarian, and I would ask you "Have any laptops just been returned?" or "Is that sign correct?"

The smart thing to do is ask a staffperson, such as yourself - nothing to lose, and potentially, a laptop to gain.

There are outdated and misleading signs all over the place, and far too few friendly library staff who care about customer service.

pos. both. Ive learned that even when you think ist spelled out for them it really isnt and you may have to redo the sign and say something like There are no more laptops available at this time.

People are stupid. I work in customer service and I know they can be stupid. Or how about when you have the open sign turned off and the gate is closed "Hey... are you guys closed?"

maybe they think you are stupid for not getting more laptops to check out

Neither. Maybe they missed the sign or they have no common sense. Since you deal with the public, it is usually no common sense.

They're not stupid, they're ignorant. They have a hard time accepting the fact that they can't have everything they want.
