50 meters can be a long time if you're not in shape, but my guess is you're kicking like mad.
What I would do is get one of those flotation devices some people just call "boards". Hang onto it with your hands way out in front of you and just kick your way across the pool. You'll soon find a kicking style that works for you.
After that, you can add yours arms back in.

It could be a number of things but here's some tips:
When you kick kick strong so the least amount of kicking gets you the furthest. Also try not to bend your knees more than nessacary and remember to point your toes (don't pull a Fred Flinstone).
Remember to use your arms and legs in proportion. A lot of swimmers tend to favor either the kick or the pull. The secret is balancing them.
Another thing: make sure you BREATE! Often a swimmer (myself included) tends to not breathe as often as they should when they're trying to go fast. This is probably okay for a 50 once to get your stamina up but anything over that you'll probably be tired by your third length.
I breathe every four strokes when I'm not sprinting. If you're not comfortable biladerall breathing (breathing on both sides) breathe every three.
Also make sure your balanced in the water with you hips even and pointed towards the bottom. Keep your chin down, so only the top of your head is out of water.
On your pull make sure you keep your fingers cupped and don't pull too deep. Bring your hands down just under your stomache. When you bring your hand out of the water remember to flick your hand to maximize your glide.

All good advice but I’ll throw something else into the mix. When you are swimming freestyle be sure you aren’t dragging your feet. You want to swim so you feel like you are swimming downhill push your chest down and your hips and feet will go up, so you will really be swimming pretty level.
Have you tried swimming with a pull buoy? A pull buoy will raise your hips so you are swimming level. Also you shouldn’t kick with a pull buoy so that might help you out.

I myself am a swimmer and I too have a difficult time doing the freestyle. When I am swimming a long set I just imagine that I am an Olympic swimmer and am going for a gold medal. I also pretend that I am on my last lap and give it all i have left. It usually works, until you realize that you have a whole 200 left to go.

I have the same problem. I am a mesomorph body type (muscle-bond) and that causes me to sink to the bottom of the pool. Freestyle requires alot more energy than the other strokes. You should think about buying a pull buoy like this one: http://www.swim2000.com/images/bettertimes/bt_2p-pull-float.jpg
You place the pull buoy between your legs and this allows you to float while you swim (although you will mainly get a workout using your arms).

First, start off slow and build your way up. You'll never start as the fastest freestyler.
1. Don't really pull with your arms. You will wear out quicker.
2. Use your core to move you through the water by turning as far sideways as possible without it feeling awkward. (this will also help your streamline)
3. Kick!

The important thing is staying afloat.
Don’t bother as long as you don’t drown. Of course, when that occurs to you, you’d have to start considering some changes in your style.

Try slowing it down some, it might be that you are trying to go too fast. If that's not it, get a lifeguard to look at your stroke, there are several things you might be doing wrong, but without seeing you swim, it's hard to say.

slow down and try lengthening out your stroke. You might also try some drills such as catchup or fingertip drag. Also remember to keep your kick going.
