Or only to some. And thank others in person, by phone, etc? Or not at all.

If it is someone really close to me, then yes. I write thank you cards for mostly everything except for stupid or prank gifts like dead mice or whatever. I usually make cards with ribbon and glitter and personalize them with photos or similar things. It shows people that I care and appreciate their gifts.

Thank them in person if they are there, obviously. That awkward silence when opening someone's present if you don't say anything is always, well, awkward. Other than that, no. The thank you cards are usually reserved for birthdays and baby/bridal gifts. Think about it....how many Christmas cards come with matching thank you cards like birthday invites and baby/bridal invites???!!!!

I thank everyone in person...person to person..face to face...means a lot more than just words writenn on a paper or a voice heard over the phone!

but of course, if the person lived far away...i'd usually call them and try to send a picture of my family and I with thank you written on it!

I never give thank you cards. I prefer to thank people in person whenever possible, or by phone if I cannot see them.

if the gift was delivered by mail or ups than a thank you note is necessary. If given in person, an in person thank you is enough

write a letter even if you've also thanked them another way. it's just really nice to recieve a letter in the post and to know that your gift was appreciated (even if it wasn't, but that's not the point).
