Screw the BCS and the NCAA, the smaller bowls should start their own playoff.

1. Get seven non-BCS bowl games to cooperate (eg. Sun, Liberty, Independence).

2. Invite eight quality teams from this list (not invited to the BCS):

Boston College . 9-3
Rutgers ........ 10-1
West Virginia .. 9-2
Wisconsin ...... 11-1
Texas A&M ...... 9-3
Houston ........ 9-3
Brigham Young .. 10-2
Oregon State ... 8-4
Navy ........... 8-3 (only if they beat Army)
Hawaii ......... 10-2
Auburn ......... 10-2
Tennessee ...... 9-3

3. The playoff is a simple, single elimination tournament.

Quarterfinals: Two Friday games, two Saturday games.
Semifinals: The Friday winners play, and the Saturday winners play.
Final: The semifinal winners play for the title.

If this became popular and outdrew the BCS on TV, the NCAA would have to drop the Bull-Crap Series and adopt a playoff.

What could the NCAA do to prevent it? Blackball schools and smaller bowl games for participating?

I like your idea about getting the smaller bowls to cooperate, but here's a plan:

The national championship game is January 8, 2007 - a *full week* after New Year's Day, which is when the bowl season used to finish. In other words, 01-08-2007 is about 5-6 weeks after the end of the regular season, which would allow plenty of time for a 32-team, single-elimination playoff, especially if the season were shortened back to 11 games (as it was for so long).

Now, take the first round, which would be a total of 16 games: those could be the most insignificant bowls (where you usually have a 6-6 team playing a 7-5 team). As the rounds progress, each round has the more significant bowls, ultimately ending up in the semifinal round (say, Orange and Sugar Bowls) and the final round (championship). The championship game should be the Rose Bowl, or "the grandaddy of 'em all."

Regardless, a playoff is necessary, so I like that you're thinking about that.

There would still be controversy about who deserves to be playing. There wouldnt be as much crying about it but what about the # 9 team that is equally good. The NCAA probably only has the BCS so it brings in more money. With only 8 teams there would only be 7 games and thats a lot less compared to how many bowl games there are. The bowl games bring in probably over half of the money that NCAA football brings in. They would be losing a lot of money. I would like to see a playoff but i dont think it would happen any time soon.

unless you can get corporate sponsorship for games involving inferior teams, good luck. that would be like the NIT of the BCS. the battle for #11. plus, the teams involved in the bcs change every year. so BC, RU, UW, WVU,A&M, OSU, UA, and UT wouldn't want to annoy the BCS. Maybe a mid major playoff would draw extra attention for those schools like BYU, Hawaii, etc but I'm pretty sure the big conference schools like the BCS otherwise they wouldnt vote to extend it.

college football should have a playoff system! All of it! Most teams in the top ten every season are just overrated! Um...Ohio State...ahem. It's not fair. It's totally political.

have a bracket like NCAAB. Have 64 teams and only recognize only one champion. They win it all they are the #1 team in the nation. I think this could work too.

GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only thing we* would have to come up with is:
What would they play for?

IE: the BCS is the recognized National championship.
What would we award the winners of this?

*we = the thousands of us fans who agree with you.
