"Equivalent" meaning what? Yes, you can explore post-secondary options having attained a GED ( community college, etc.). But no, its connotation is that it always takes a back seat to the "real deal", no matter what.

not really.. High School Diploma shows you tried hard and you could get it for free by going to school and passing your test. GED says you were too lazy to go to school and have to pay extra to take a test.

sort of. a diploma is better. A GED says "now you are smart enough to have graduated high school".
