If you have Visa debit card. You might able to avoid the ATM withdraw fee. By doing a Visa cash advance. However, some banks may not accept UK passports for ID. I don't know if you can use your Visa debit card as a cash advance-some US debit cards can be used this way. Some banks charge fees and there maybe fees at your bank for doing it this way.
If your card is a Visa debit. You can use it anywhere Visa is accepted. Just choose credit. Some places you need to tell them this has to be run as a credit card. Pin transaction may not work.
If it a Maestro debit. There are not that many merchants that take those card. Less atm take these type of cards.
If your are going to use it at an atm. Find one, where you don't need to insert the card. This way the machine won't eat it.
You will still get a currency conversion fee charge for each transaction.

Unfortunately, US banks charge for using the ATM if regarded as a foreign card. Barclays, however, do have an agreement with Bank of America where Bank of America will not charge for using a Barclays card.

I think that they all charge for using UK debit cards in the US (and Canada) for that matter.. It is such a rip off in my opinion.
