$400-$500 will be the very low end. This assumes it is an electric dryer, you have extra space for a 240v appliance breaker in your main electric service panel, that the panel itself is easy to access, the location where you want the hookup is easy to access and hot and cold water lines are easy to access. You'll also need easy access to a drain. Romex wiring, Copper wtare supply plumbing, and PVC drain piping are easiest and quickest to deal with.
The most basic example of this would be installing your washer/dryer hookup in an unfinished basement near a sewer drain pipe.
The other extreme (which will be costly) is where your main service panel is on the far end of your garage, you live in a house built before 1965 with plaster walls and outdated wiring, the plumbing is cast iron, and you want to put the washer/dryer hookup on your 2nd level... and your dryer is powered by natural gas. Now you're looking at a couple thousand dollars. Double it if your service panel needs upgrading.
Your location will also affect the price. Electricians and plumbers try to command rip-off rates in more heavily populated areas so shop around. Best bet is to find a all-around handman who is comforable with BOTH plumbing and electrical. You will need a dedicated 240v appliance circuit for an electric dryer. Or, you will need to extend your gas line, if you are planning on a gas dryer.
Good luck.

If you have the basic hookups necessary, e. e., holes in the floor, 220 line for the electric dryer, water for the washer, and gas line for a gas dryer, it is a lot cheaper than having to get all the basics in first. If you have the basics already in, and have the dryer and washer bought, it will cost you about $50 for the basic minimum one hour installer to come from Sears or Home Depot. Then it will cost you about $50 for the Service call. then, it will cost you for any parts (gas pipe, electric hookup wires, etc.), and for putting in the exhaust for the dryer, and hooking up water ans sewer lines for the washer. If you budget about $200 I think you will be quite safe.
