Okay people...the computer I need to connect TO - the desktop - doesn't have a remote connection option, being Home Edition; the computer that will be doing the connecting - the laptop - is Media Center and DOES have that option. I need to connect it so that I can access the desktop from the laptop. How can I set it up so that my desktop will have that option to connect from the laptop? I don't need something that's going to connect me to the laptop via the desktop, because that won't help me. I need to be able to access my desktop when I am away from it.
If you DO give me a link, please explain it a little, as I am computer illiterate and would love walk through directions.

As I explained in the last thread, you can't do it using windows remote desktop - the HOST computer (the one being connected to) has to be either XP pro or media. You could do it the other way around by installing the remote desktop client software on the XP home computer, but that will only allow you to use that computer to remotely access other computers, not what you want to do.

To connect to the XP home computer, you'll need to use something like pcAnywhere, GoToMyPC or similar products.

I have almost the same setup except that my laptop also runs WinXP Home Edition which my home desktop also does. By "away from it" (the desktop), I presume you want to be able to connect to it from the laptop when you are away from your home. LogMeIn seems to be the best solution for this situation and that is what I use. Go to http://www.logmein.com and under products, go to LogMeIn Free. Download the software and install it on your Desktop. When you go to download the software, you will also create an account. Now, wherever you go with your laptop, goto http://www.logmein.com and login with the account that you created. You can then see your desktop on the control panel for Remote Control. Click on it and this time login with the same userid/password that you use on your Desktop. You will be able to control the desktop from there.
Needless to say, your home desktop must be always connected to the Internet. I have mine behind a router and a firewall and I have had NO problem in connecting. Of course, LogMeIn must be running in the desktop and you can see the status from the icon on the Icon Tray.
Hope this helps. The FAQ listed in the second source is excellent and gives a lot of details and answers.

There is software out there, aimed at the average person who owns a computer. I haven't used these personally. You need to be careful whose solution you use, the software needs to be secure enough that you're not worried about your computer getting accessed by anyone else.

http://www.gotomypc.com has been around for years, I haven't heard much about them, but at least they're an established name. I found an easy-to-read review of it here http://www.pcsupportadvisor.com/best_remote_access_software_p2.htm

CNET reviewed LogMeIn about a year ago, and seemed pretty happy. I've found their reviews are pretty good, and I'm also glad to see someone who's tried it recommending it. http://reviews.cnet.com/LogMeIn/4505-3536_7-31394067.html

Symantec's PCanywhere has also been around for quite a while, and Symantec is an established security software company. http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=pf&pvid=pca12

In general, I wouldn't expect amazing speed on a home product, but I'd expect low prices & free demos (cheaper than a date).
If you'd rather have a business class product, you can find a Cisco firewall or security router for about $500 and get great speed and security. Buy from a local networking shop, and they'll come in and install it for you.

You can't do that with XP Home Edition.

You could install another remote control package on your PC. We use Ultra VNC at work with a lot of success. Have a look at http://www.ultravnc.com/ It's free, open source, and fairly simple to get up and running, even for a newbie. Full docs and instructions are at the site.

Others have mentioned Go To My PC, LogMeIn or PC Anywhere. Those will work, but will cost you money. You won't get much for your money, either. VNC has been around for years and is the "propeller head's choice."

It depends on what you want to use your desktop for when you are away. If you just need it to access files, you can access it using ssh but ssh is a command line utility with no graphical interface and you have to have a certain amount of experience with the command line to use it.
If you are looking for a graphical method, try vncviewer. Google vncviewer for the website and their website has all the information you will require to install it and get it working.
