do you know why clams shells are so hard to open

Because there are two strong muscles called adductor muscles which hold the two shells together. Once you get the shell open (by steaming the clams for example), and remove the clam from the shell, you can see on the inside of the shell the two rather shiny areas where the two muscles were attached. In fact, sometimes the muscles don't even detach from the shell during steaming, which makes removal of the clam from the shell difficult even after it is open.

Because the little buggers are in there holding on for dear life to keep their shells closed!!! That's why steaming is a good idea.

If you put them in the oven when they get hot they will open and the flesh will not cook if you watch them closely
