Pretty much everything that was mentioned above. Make sure that when you bring the little guy/girl home that you already have the cage set up. I recommend buying the cage, litter, food, and water bottle in advance, setting them up and then going to buy the hamster. Let them into the cage in a quiet, and somewhat dark spot, but not too dark, dimly lit. I recommend, also, that you leave them in there for an hour or so, and then keep an eye on them and talk to them so they can get used to your voice and your smell. Then I would also advise you to put a little food in the palm of your hand and SLOWLY and GENTLY stick your hand in the cage. Do not be afraid of the hamster. They will smell the food, and if they aren't too afraid of you will only get the food out of your hand. They might nip, nibble, or bite, but it would only be because you smell like the food.
If you have any other questions, let me know. I'm really good about taming hamsters.

I've been keeping hamsters for a long time now... real long time. Get a nice cage with the door at the top; this will make it much harder for the little thing to escape. A wheel, a little place for the hamster to hide, water bottle, food bowl, chew sticks and a ball. One really cheap way to entertain a hamster is by putting an empty toilet paper roll in the cage; they love running through it. ^.^
And of course... hamster food. They like chopped up carrots and apples too.

I have a hamster....
The coolest thing to do for it is to make sure it has a lot of crawling space in it's cage. With all the little tubes, and wheel stuff. However I think it really enjoy's the little ball that I bought for it, .... it gives the hamster to roll all over the place.
Good luck with your hamster!!

A good-sized cage with lots of things to climb over and into and explore, an exercise ball, and things it can chew on. Also, handle it frequently to get it used to you - give it raisins or other veggies or fruits. Good luck, hamsters are great little companions!
