Well according to my Baby Center magazine (read this lastnight) the best way to naturally start your labor is nipple stimulation. I know it threw me for a loop as well. But it says "stimulating nipples-by hand or breast pump-can bring on serious contractions. Do it gradually so the contractions don't come too close together. The reliability is 5 out of 5. Then working down is sex which is 4 out of 5. Then castor oil which is 3 out of 5. Then Walking, 2 out of 5. Last is spicy foods... 1 out of 5.
Good luck!

RE:
Natural methods to speed up labor...?
I have had a frustrating time! I will have some really good contraction as close as 6 minutes apart for about an hour or two. Then they'll just go away... they say your first is harder to distinguish false from real labor... but I KNEW with that one. my second is the one playing games......

All the tips so far are right! Your best bet is sex (this produces the hormone that causes contractions), or nipple stimulation also produces the same hormone. walking and other excersise causes contractions but without the hormone they will just die off. Now if you are very close and the hormone has started to kick in then this will help but not with the results as the other two. Caster oil is an old wives tale...If it does work it is coincidence because there is no medical backing to that one. Good luck and remember is you are not at least 37-38 weeks you may want to let the baby cook a little longer. You don't want to rush a baby that is not done!

I know the feeling...Let's see with my second when I was put on bed rest...I didn't do anything. I was placed on bedrest because the OB proceeded to strip membrane w/o my knowing and baby was too high that if my water would've broken I would've had a prolapse cord (USAF military dr, can't sue)
Day before induction: I did yardwork. Heavy duty cleaning. I ended up being induced with pitocin....
I also heard...
Eat spicy food and drink a beer
play with the nipples (stimulates oxytocin)
have sex (for the same reason as nipples)
Any heavy exercise
Castor oil (I personally wouldn't do that because I would be too afraid having the runs while in labor...)
Other words...you may go when your child is ready.

My neighbor said that she hopped on her bike and rode about 3 miles. It shouldn't hurt you or the baby since it's full term (no concern for miscarriage).
Unfortunately, I had and induction followed 29 hrs later by an emergency c-section so I haven't actually experienced the real thing. I had actuall steady contractions, but never dilated beyond 3.5 cm.
Good luck!!
Tip, Before you try to jumpstart labor, eat a good hearty meal. You won't get anything once the contractions send you to the hospital.
They gave be juice and broth and crackers, but I couldn't keep anything down. Luckily, I'd snuck a few cookies from my friend!! :-)

Castor oil worked for me. Every pregnancy and delivery is different so it doesn't surprise me that this one is giving you a hard time. I was having the same symptoms with my second baby. I tried walking, sex, nipple stimulation, jumping up and down, you name it and I tried it! Castor oil worked for me within hours. It wasn't very pleasant but I was not up for pitocin. I was able to labor without any IVs and I had him naturally. Make sure you are keeping yourself very hydrated because labor can take it out of you. Castor oil will give you a tummy ache and some diarrhea but I was glad that it helped me get my baby. Good luck.

well I'm not sure if this is embarrassing to share or not? Or if I should.. but here goes! I was in the 38th week with my second son and I was really getting tired of waiting! (my first was 5 weeks early so I wasn't used to the waiting!).. anyways, everyone went out one morning and left me home to sleep.. and I got out the vibrator to see if it would get the labor going.. and at supper that night my water broke and my son was born around midnight! It sure worked and I only shared this information with my sister, husband and my mom! lol!
So the big "O" works!

there are pressure points on your feet and ankles. on your ankles on the inside next to the bone that jets out start there and rub up.... you gotta do it hard for fifteen minutes at a time take ten minutes breaks. also theres one that on your heel and its only there during pregnancy, you'll feel a little dent you probably should have someone else push it for you, you gotta push till it hurts its best if you alternate between the two. i did it when i was two weeks late and within an hour i was starting to have contractions. keep doing it till your contractions are regular. also sex and dancing will help.

My husband decided it was time for his son to get here, so we had sex. About 30 min later I was in labor. I know you have probbly heard this one before, and I wasn't sure if it would really work, but it did for me. If you close to your due date, and trust me, if your like me, you prob don't feel like it, but its worth giving it a shot.
