Roll is a list of names of a group - could be in the military or school or any organization.

To call the roll is to call every name on the list to see who is present and who is absent.

I remember this from my army days. A 'nominal roll', a list of names of the men belonging to a particular Regiment, Battert, Platoon or whatever. When on parade, the Officer of NCO would 'call the roll' by calling out the names on the list, normally in alphabetical order. You answered with 'Sir'! when your name was called. It is probably used in all walks of life when a list of employees etc are on a fire practice, or a school or building has to be evacuated.
