Well what would you like to know about Odessa? It's a nice place to live and raise a family since you don't have much crime and a little less to worry about. But you'll probably be bored being used to the big city life. But I don't like to look at negative things. There's never any traffic here, but people to stink at driving. There's a lot of friendly people and if you want to go to the bigger cities there's El Paso which is 4 hours, Dallas is 5 hours, and San Antonio is about 5 hours away. So you and your wife can always escape for a weekend. I grew up here in Odessa and I'm pretty happy living here still. Since you've lived in Houston for so long maybe a change of scenery will be good too.

I wouldn't leave Houston for Midland-Odessa for even a million bucks. It's a completely different pace of life and will be a big change to your lifestyle. More ppl leave that area than move to it. I'm used to the big city style here in Houston that can't be matched by the small towns out west.

You can have a nice quality of life in Midland/Odessa it that's what you want. If you like big-city amenities, like lots of restaurant choices, major league sports, non-chain-store shopping options, etc... Odessa would be difficult.

There are minor league sports, small theatres and all of the chain stores you'd expect. Schools are pretty good in general and Odessans are obsessed with high school football, especially Odessa Permian. West Texans are friendly, which makes up for a lot of what those cities lack. 300 miles to Ft. Worth if you're desperate for big city lights.

My answer is not going to enlighten you at all :-)
I am from NC. All I know about Odessa, TX, I learned in Nashville TN. There was a caterer from Odessa in Nashville who had the absolutely best BBQ ribs I have EVER eaten! I think they were called the Chuckwagon Gang BBQ. This was in 1975, and I swore if I was ever in Odessa I would try to find those ribs. So, if you end up there, see if they are still in business and enjoy!
